WILY CYCLEWORKS
ROLE: DESIGNER, CO-BUILDER
Balancing a retail environment, cafe, and bicycle shop in a single space is possibly one of the most satisfying space planning challenges you could give me. I love imagining the customer, what they need, and how to make them feel good when they enter the space.
We proposed a layout that funneled customers to the counter, within browsing distance of retail on their right and a sightline to seating on their left. If they were coming in for service they could easily pass by the cafe and head straight to the mechanics counter.

Wily (why-lee) wanted to create a space for the local cycling community that felt like home. Where you could start your day or end your day.

Enough separation to feel comfortable, yet help build some curiosity about “what’s over there”.
Although Tacoma Washington is not a cycling city, that makes it all the nicer to feel welcomed by a familiar and warm atmosphere. We didn’t build a space that felt like it came out of the town, rather a home for those that feel at home on their bikes, appreciate a good coffee, a nice sound system and good lighting.
